The Tale of the Taffy
Taffy Shop has whipped up millions of gourmet salt water taffies in over 70 irresistible flavors. What began on the sunny shores of the Great Salt Lake has stretched all the way to screens across the globe. Through sweet persistence and plenty of taste testing, we've crafted what we proudly call the best salt water taffy in the world.
1893
The Saltair resort was opened on the shores of the Great Salt Lake in Utah.
It had rides, swimming, dining, music, and dancing and was soon boasted as the “Coney Island of the West.”
They introduced salt water taffy to their guests, who ate while pulled around by hand. It was an instant hit.
1920
With over 500,000 visitors each year, the demand for taffy was hard to keep up with.
Traditional flavors of taffy included Vanilla, Chocolate, Licorice, Cinnamon, Banana, Cherry, Molasses and Root Beer.
up to 1970
The Great Depression, World War II, a drought, and 2 fires.
During this time, Saltair was rebuilt bigger and better after being destroyed by fire. It was dubbed “The Coney Island of the West.” The demand for salt water taffy was hard to keep up with… until a drought left the shoreline half a mile from the resort.Due to another fire, there would be no more salt water taffy and no resort for decades.
1993
Our founder purchased Salt Air and reopened its doors.
In addition to opening the resort, he brought Taffy Shop Salt Water Taffy to the beloved shores of the Great Salt Lake.
1998
Taffy Shop sets up a website to share Salt Water Taffy with the world.
The demand for Salt Water Taffy was increasing, so Taffy Shop was one of the early adopters of the internet and began selling salt water taffy to the world.
2017
We moved the business to St. George, Utah
Our family plans changed and we moved the family business with us to the middle of the desert.
2000
Sales on the internet exceeded sales from the concession stand at Salt Air.
With increasing demand, Taffy Shop was forced to relocate to a larger space in order to begin full-time shipping operations.
2021
We opened our first retail storefront location.
Local support and tourism has helped us open our first “brick and mortar” location and supply sweet-smiling people from the local community.
